Part 2 of 12 / Tradition vs. Truth: When False Apostles Shout Modern Claims & Titles Replace God’s Word

Religious tradition can be a powerful tool for teaching, preserving truth, and guiding discipleship; but it is also one of the most subtle dangers to spiritual life. In the first century, the Pharisees developed elaborate oral traditions to “guard” God’s Law. These traditions were meant to preserve holiness and prevent inadvertent sin, yet they eventually became equal to or even higher than the Word of God itself.
Jesus directly confronted this when He said:
“So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.” - Matthew 15:6
Here, we see a principle that applies to the church today: when human systems, rules, or customs replace God’s Word, the heart of worship is distorted. In Week 2, we will investigate how the Pharisees’ devotion to tradition displaced truth, how Jesus rebuked it, and how the modern church must guard against the same error.
The Rise Of Tradition & Its Original Purpose
The Pharisees’ oral traditions initially arose from a legitimate desire to protect obedience to God’s Law. They created detailed interpretations of the Torah to help people understand how to live holy lives in complex social contexts. Fences were built around the Law to ensure no commandments were inadvertently broken.
However, over time, the traditions themselves became the standard of righteousness. The focus shifted from hearing and obeying God to following human rules, often rigidly. For example, the practice of Corban, a dedication to God that allowed individuals to neglect parental responsibility, illustrates how a seemingly spiritual tradition could nullify the clear command of God.
"And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)—then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” - Mark 7:9–13
Jesus’ rebuke highlights a timeless warning: human systems, when prioritized over God’s Word, can distort faith and lead to spiritual compromise. Traditions can deceive even the most devout into believing they are faithful while their hearts drift from God.
Jesus’ Confrontation with Pharisaical Tradition
In Matthew 15, Jesus exposes the Pharisees’ hypocrisy by contrasting human tradition with God’s commands. He says:
“You reject the commandment of God so that you may keep your tradition.” - Mark 7:9
This was not a rejection of careful teaching, but a condemnation of placing human rules above divine authority. The Pharisees had allowed their traditions to override God’s moral and relational commands. Worship, prayer, and religious observance became forms of performance, not transformation.
Jesus’ confrontation is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago. When church programs, denominational policies, or cultural norms are valued above obedience to Scripture, the community can drift into Pharisaical patterns. Tradition is good, but it must never replace the living Word of God.
The Heart Issue: Obedience vs. Performance
The core problem of Pharisaical tradition was heart displacement. Outward compliance with man-made rules became more important than inward obedience to God. They honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him.
"These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” - Matthew 15:8–9
Modern examples include:
Churches that emphasize attendance, tithing, or ritual, but neglect discipleship and personal holiness.
Leaders who defend denominational policies over Scripture when decisions conflict with God’s commands.
Believers who follow cultural norms in the name of faith, but fail to practice justice, mercy, and love.
The danger is subtle, often invisible. Tradition can feel righteous and orderly, even holy, but without the heart aligned to God, it becomes spiritually dead.
Warnings to the Modern Church
1. Tradition Can Nullify God’s Word: Just as the Pharisees did, churches and individuals can prioritize human rules over God’s commands, effectively “voiding” the Word.
"But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.'" - Matthew 15:6–9
2. Ritual Without Repentance Leads to Spiritual Blindness: Practices that emphasize form over substance can create a false sense of holiness while leaving the heart unchanged.
3. Cultural Approval Can Replace Kingdom Obedience: When human recognition or cultural alignment becomes more important than faithfulness to God, the church drifts toward Pharisaical conformity.
These warnings remind us that orthodoxy or ritual without genuine heart transformation is not enough. The modern church must constantly return to the living Word and test all traditions against it.
Transition | NAR: When Titles Replace God’s Word
During our Week 1 discussion, we explored the origins and the initial influence of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR). We emphasized the movement’s departure from historic and Biblical orthodoxy. This week, we are going to dive deeper into the theology, the organizational strategies, and the spiritual dangers that arise when charismatic authority is elevated above Scripture. The goal of this study is not to cast any fear, but to cultivate Biblical Discernment, enabling Pastors, Leaders, and Believers of Christ to recognize patterns that compromise Biblical Faith.
The modern church is not suffering from a lack of passion, activity, or innovation. It is suffering from a lack of Biblical Discernment. One of the most dangerous developments within contemporary Christianity is the revival of self-appointed apostles, men and women who claim extraordinary spiritual authority, yet while operating outside the clear Biblical boundaries of Scripture.
The New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) teaches that God is restoring the offices of Apostle and Prophet to govern the modern-day Church in the last days.
These individuals are often presented as Visionaries, Power-Bearers, and Strategic Leaders who receive direct revelation from God for Nations, Churches, and Movements.
Their authority is often unquestioned, their words treated as Divine Directives from Heaven, and their influence far-reaching.
Scripture clearly warns us plainly: not all who claim apostolic authority are sent by God.
2 Corinthians 11:13, “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.”
The Apostle Paul continues in Galatians 1:6-7 saying, “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him (Jesus) who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different Gospel, which is not just another account; but there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the Gospel of Christ.”
We are going to examine the Biblical meaning of Apostleship, the finality of the original Apostles, and the grave dangers of embracing modern Apostolic claims that undermine the sufficiency of Scripture and the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We will also investigate NAR’s framework; this caution is ever-present: discernment is required when teachings diverge from the Gospel of Christ.
The Biblical Definition Of Apostle
The Greek word Apostolos means “one who is sent with authority.” In the New Testament, this term is not loosely applied. Apostles were “personally chosen and commissioned by Jesus Christ Himself.”
“Now it was at this time that He (Jesus) went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer with God. And when day came, He (Jesus) called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles.” - Luke 6:12-13
Qualifications Of A True Apostle
According to the Scripture above, an Apostle:
1. Was An Eyewitness Of The Resurrected Christ
Acts 1:22, “beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us – one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”
1 Corinthians 9:1, “Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?”
2. Was Personally Appointed By Christ
Galatians 1:1, “Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through human agency, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead,”
3. Authenticated Their Ministry Through Signs And Wonders Given By God
2 Corinthians 12:12, “The distinguishing marks of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs, wonders, and miracles.”
4. Laid The Once-For-All Foundation Of The Church
Ephesians 2:19-20 confirms this saying, “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens . . . built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.”
Ephesians 2:20, “having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone,”
These qualifications listed above were NOT transferable, repeatable, or generational. Apostles were NOT a governing office to be inherited, but a foundational role tied to the revelation of Jesus Christ. A foundation which once it was laid once, it is NOT to be repeatedly rebuilt.
The Finality Of Apostolic Authority
The Apostles served a unique redemptive-historical purpose. Through them, God delivered the inspired New Testament Scriptures (John 14:26; 16:13).
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and remind you of all that I said to you.” “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak and He will disclose to you what is to come.” - John 14:26; 16:13
Once the canon of Scripture was complete, ALL apostolic authority CEASED, not because God stopped speaking, but because God had FULLY SPOKEN IN His Son Jesus Christ.
“God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom He also made the world.” - Hebrews 1:1-2
The Church today is NOT governed by new apostles, but by:
The Written Word Of God
“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.” - Acts 20:28
Faithful Pastor's & Elders
“For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoints elders in every city as I directed you, namely, if any man is beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of indecent behavior or rebellion.” - Titus 1:5-6
Sound Doctrine Preserved & Taught
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
To claim modern apostleship is, implicitly or explicitly, to suggest that Scripture is insufficient that God’s final revelation needs updating, expansion, or reinterpretation by elite spiritual leaders.
This is NOT restoration, it is regression.
Paul’s Warning About False Apostles
The Apostle Paul confronted false apostles head-on. He did not celebrate them as a diverse expression of ministry. He exposed them as deceivers.
“For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” - 2 Corinthians 11:13-14
False Apostles Do 5 Things
Claim Divine Authority Without Biblical Warrant
‘I know your deeds and your labor and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil people, and you have put those who call themselves apostles to the test, and they are not, and you found them to be false; - Revelation 2:2
Draw Disciples After Themselves
"I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things to draw away the disciples after them." - Acts 20:29-30
Introduce New Teachings, Visions, Or Revelations
"Now these things, brothers and sisters, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos on your account, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other." - 1 Corinthians 4:6
Replace Scripture With Personal Prophecy
"You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the L ord your God which I am commanding you."

Elevate Experience Above Truth
"This is what the Lord of armies says: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you. They are leading you into futility; They tell a vision of their own imagination, Not from the mouth of the Lord. “They keep saying to those who despise Me, ‘The Lord has said, “You will have peace”’; And as for everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, They say, ‘Disaster will not come on you.’ “But who has stood in the council of the Lord , That he should see and hear His word? Who has paid attention to His word and listened? “Behold, the storm of the L ord has gone forth in wrath, Even a whirling tempest; It will swirl down on the head of the wicked. “The anger of the Lord will not turn back until He has performed and carried out the purposes of His heart; In the last days you will clearly understand it. “I did not send these prophets, But they ran. I did not speak to them, But they prophesied. “But if they had stood in My council, Then they would have announced My words to My people, And would have turned them back from their evil way And from the evil of their deeds." - Jeremiah 23:16
Their danger lies not in obvious heresy alone, but in subtle spiritual deception cloaked in Christian language.
Modern Apostolic Claims & Spiritual Control
Within the NAR Environments, “apostles” often function as:
Final Spiritual Authority
“The one major rule governing any new revelation from God is that it cannot contradict what has already been written in the Bible. It may supplement (complete or enhances or adds to it) however.” - Peter Wagner
"You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the L ord your God which I am commanding you."
- Deuteronomy 4:2
"Do not add to His words or He will rebuke you, and you will be proved a liar." - Proverbs 30:6
Receivers Of Direct Revelation
"Certainly the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret plan to His servants the prophets." - Amos 3:7
‘And in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition." - Mark 7:7-9
Gatekeepers Of Divine Blessings
"For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time." - 1 Timothy 2:5
"Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need." - Hebrews 4:16
There is one mediator; not apostles, not prophets, not spiritual fathers.Access to God is not filtered through modern leaders. If someone teaches that blessing flows primarily through alignment with a specific apostolic covering, that places a human intermediary where Scripture places Christ alone.
Access is through Christ, by the Spirit, o the Father, but not through apostolic networks or prophetic alignment.
Strategic Commanders Over Regions, Churches, & Nations
"And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and made Him head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all." - Ephesians 1:22-23
"I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say." - 3 John 1:9
"But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and those in high position exercise authority over them. It is not this way among you, but whoever wants to become prominent among you shall be your servant, and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” - Matthew 20:25-29
Followers are frequently discouraged from questioning leadership, warned against “touching God’s anointed,” or accused of rebellion for raising Biblical concerns. This type of atmosphere is enforced and breeds spiritual intimidation, not Christ-like shepherding.
Jesus warned against this EXACT behavior within the Church and Scripture repeatedly affirms that God values discernment and WARNS against despising or rejecting those who exercise it:
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them (the people) . . . it shall not be so among you.” - Matthew 20:25-26
“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And I find knowledge and discretion. “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride, arrogance, the evil way, And the perverted mouth, I hate. “Advice is mine and sound wisdom; I am understanding, power is mine." - Proverbs 8:12-14
Implication & Warning For NAR: God values prudence, knowledge, and discernment. When leaders or movements discourage questioning or belittle those who test teachings, they are dishonoring the very qualities God treasures. A church culture that mocks or suppresses discernment is opposing God’s design for spiritual maturity.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction."
- Proverbs 1:7
Implication & Warning For NAR: To reject discernment or look down on those who test prophetic words, apostolic claims, or leadership is foolishness. God is clear that wisdom begins with reverence for Him, NOT blind allegiance to fallen mankind. Discernment is a safeguard against deception, and those who treat it as unnecessary are acting contrary to God’s standard.
"But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. But the one who is spiritual discerns all things, yet he himself is discerned by no one. For who has known the mind of the Lord , that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ." - 1 Corinthians 2:14-16
Biblical leadership is servant leadership, marked by humility, accountability, and submission to God’s Word – NOT dominance or unquestioned authority.
Apostolic Authority VS Pastoral Oversight
Scripture presents a clear model for church leadership:
Elders/Pastors Shepherd The Flock
“Therefore, I urge elders among you, as your fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and one who is also a fellow partaker of the glory that is to be revealed; shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but voluntarily, according to the will of god; and not with greed but with eagerness; nor yet as domineering over those assigned to your care, but by proving to be examples to the flock.” - 1 Peter 5:13
Leaders Are Accountable To Scripture
"Do not become teachers in large numbers, my brothers, since you know that we who are teachers will incur a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to rein in the whole body as well."
- James 3:1-2
"Now these people were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so." - Acts 17:11
Authority Is Derived, Not Intrinsic
There is NO Biblical Mandate for modern apostles ruling over churches or issuing binding decrees for believers. The moment a leader’s words are treated as equal to or above Scripture, the Church has entered dangerous territory.
“Now these things, brothers and sisters, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos on your account, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant on behalf of one against the other.” - 1 Corinthians 4:6
With the understanding of Apostles, we are now going to look at the Theological Distortions.
Theological Distortions
The New Apostolic Reformation promotes several doctrinal positions that are inconsistent with historic Christianity:
1. Restoration Of Modern Apostles & Prophets
NAR teaches that apostles and prophets must be restored to establish God’s kingdom on earth. While Scripture affirms apostolic and prophetic ministry, these roles were foundational for the early church (Ephesians 2:20) and NOT as hierarchical offices claiming authority over nations or churches today.
"You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the L ord your God which I am commanding you." - Deuteronomy 4:2
"Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words or He will rebuke you, and you will be proved a liar." - Proverbs 30:5-6
"God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom He also made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, to the extent that He has inherited a more excellent name than they." - Hebrews 1:1-4
2. Dominion Theology
A central tenet is the belief that Christians are mandated to exercise dominion over society, politics, and cultural institutions. This often leads to conflation of spiritual authority with political influence, prioritizing human agendas over obedience to God’s Word.
"But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and those in high position exercise authority over them. It is not this way among you, but whoever wants to become prominent among you shall be your servant, and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” - Matthew 20:25-28
"So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit." - Ephesians 2:19-22

3. Word-Faith Principles
The movement frequently emphasizes the believer’s authority to “declare” or “decree” outcomes, suggesting faith functions as a force to manipulate reality. This clearly misrepresents the nature of Biblical Faith, which trusts God’s sovereign will rather than attempted to coerce results from God.
Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Organizational Strategies & Cultural Influence
NAR is not merely a theological trend; it is a strategic movement with significant influence on contemporary church culture.
Key strategies include:
Networked Apostolic Oversight: leaders claim authority over clusters of churches and ministries, establishing hierarchical networks often without being held to accountability.
Mass Mobilization & Conferences: high-energy events cultivate loyalty and spiritual dependence on charismatic figures, creating emotional reinforcement for doctrinal positions without questioning said decision/person.
Media & Prophetic Messaging: social media, prophetic broadcasts, and books are used to extend the influential reach and solidify the perception of divine authority from God.
While effective in expansion, these strategies blur the line between spiritual guidance and authoritarian control, creating environments where questioning is highly discouraged, if you question, it is derived as a us versus them mentality.
The Danger Of Elevating Human Leaders
One of the GRAVEST risks in the NAR is the elevation of the individual to divine status.
Leaders are often viewed as:
Apostolic Authorities With God-Given Mandates Beyond Scripture
Gatekeepers of Blessing or Prophetic Insight
Final Arbiters of Doctrinal or Strategic Decisions
Such elevation undermines the sufficiency of Scripture and the Lordship of Christ.
The early Church consistently warned against this in Hebrews 13:17.
“Obey your leaders and submit to them – for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account – so that they may do this with joy, not groaning; for this would be unhelpful for you.”
- Hebrews 13:17
When leaders claim authority beyond Scripture, accountability is replaced by fear, loyalty is measured by obedience to a person rather than Christ, and congregations are left vulnerable to spiritual manipulation.
Prophetic Misuse And The Risk Of Spiritual Abuse
The NAR places heavy emphasis on prophetic revelation. While God gifts His people with prophecy, Scripture is clear that prophecy is ALWAYS subject to TESTING.
NAR practices often:
Treat Prophetic Words As Unquestionable Truth
Use Prophecy/Prophetic Words To Control or Pressure Followers
Reward Conformity/Sinful Behavior & Punish Those In Discernment
This creates fertile ground for Spiritual Abuse, where believers may be coerced into obedience under the guise of divine mandate. Discernment is therefore NOT optional; it is a Biblical imperative.
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” - 1 John 4:1
The Cultural Appeal And Its Subtle Danger
NAR teachings are appealing because they promise:
Purpose & Significance
Immediate Spiritual Authority & Empowerment
Visible Results & Success
However, the appeal often masks theological compromise. By centering human leaders, experiential practices, and worldly success, the movement shifts focus from Christ and His Word.
Believers can be subtly drawn into:
Confusing Emotional Experiences With Spiritual Depth
Seeking Personal Advancement As Evidence Of Faith
Accepting Doctrinal Shortcuts That Bypass The Truth Of Scripture
Marks 8:36 warns, “For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?”
Why This Matters In The Last Days
Jesus warned that deception would intensify as His Return approaches:
“And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many people.’” - Matthew 24:4-5
False apostles thrive more now than ever because the world is spiritually hungry, our culture is in chaos, and culture today desires answers of certainty, even if it validates their beliefs even when their false. This movement promises clarity, power, and purpose, but causes confusion, bondage, and doctrinal drift from Christ. Discernment is NOT OPTIONAL in these last days. It is a matter of SPIRITUAL SURVIVAL through DISCERNMENT from the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
Pastoral Warning & Exhortation
To the Church of God within our world today, I say that we MUST RETURN to the sufficiency of Scripture, the authority of Christ alone, to hold the Biblical model of church leadership, and humility must test every single teaching. Not every anointed voice is sent by God. Satan can also send those who he can deceive through signs and wonders. Not every movement labeled ‘revival’ is from the Holy Spirit. Remember, not every leader who claims apostolic authority is being accountable to Christ.
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, the NAR is not merely a distant theological curiosity, but its influence permeates many churches today. While its leaders may appear gifted or anointed, any teaching that elevates humans above Christ or Scripture is a WARNING SIGNAL. The call of the Church is to remain faithful, discerning, and rooted in God’s Word. Faithful discernment protects both the individual and the Church. It is an act of Love – Love for God, Love for His people, and Love for His Truth.
Jude 1:20-21, “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.”
Application
Examine traditions, rituals, or systems in your church: do they enhance obedience to God, or replace it?

In Week 2, we examined the dangers that arise when spiritual authority is elevated above Scripture, comparing the Pharisees of Jesus’ day with modern apostolic movements such as the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR). The Pharisees, though devout, allowed human tradition to override God’s Word, leading to spiritual blindness. Similarly, NAR leaders often claim apostolic authority, receive personal revelation, and exert influence over churches and regions, positioning themselves as gatekeepers of blessing and truth. Scripture, however, makes clear that apostles were uniquely appointed eyewitnesses of Christ, whose foundation-laying role was once-for-all (Luke 6:12–13; Acts 1:21–22; Ephesians 2:20). Modern claims of apostolic governance or revelatory authority that surpass the Word risk undermining the sufficiency of Scripture and the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
We also explored the biblical model of leadership, emphasizing servant-hearted oversight, accountability, and the testing of teachings (1 Peter 5:1–3; James 3:1; Acts 17:11). Christ alone is Head, and Scripture alone is sufficient for doctrine and spiritual guidance (Ephesians 1:22–23; 2 Timothy 3:16–17). False apostles, like the Pharisees, draw followers after themselves, introduce teachings that exceed the written Word, and elevate experience over truth (2 Corinthians 11:13–14; Jeremiah 23:16). Discernment, grounded in the Word and the Spirit, protects the Church from deception, ensures leaders remain accountable, and preserves faithfulness to Christ. The call of Week 2 is to test all teaching, submit to Christ’s authority, and build the Church upon the one true foundation.

Lord Jesus,

Preview Week 3 | Pride, Power, and Prophetic Deception: When Authority, “God Told Me,” and False Wonders Undermine the Word of God
Next week, our study will confront a sobering truth that echoes from the days of Jesus to the present: pride and the misuse of authority can blind even the most faithful to God’s Word. Just as the Pharisees wielded power to control the spiritual narrative of their time, modern leaders today claim prophetic insight or extra-biblical revelation, sometimes to elevate their own voice above Scripture.
We will examine how statements like “God told me” can subtly, but dangerously silence the sufficiency of God’s Word. Through false signs, counterfeit wonders, and spiritual deception, many can be and are being led astray through trusting human authority over His divine authority.
Next week’s study will challenge you to discern carefully, measuring every claim of revelation, every miraculous display, and every spiritual pronouncement against the unchanging truth of God's Scripture. By understanding these tactics, you as a believer in Christ can guard your heart and mind against the same traps that ensnared the Pharisees and that continue to appear in our modern churches today.
