Introduction: The Place Many Struggle To Stay

Jesus now brings us into one of the most personal and deeply revealing parts of abiding: As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” - John 15:9.

These words are not just theological, they are INTENSELY RELATIONAL. Jesus is not merely explaining something about God; He is inviting you into an experience of His love that is meant to become the Place You Live From, not just something you occasionally think about.

And yet, this is where many believers quietly struggle the most.

You may believe that God loves you in a general sense, but still live as though that love is fragile, conditional, or dependent on your performance. You may find yourself feeling close to Him when you are doing well, and distant when you are not. You may wrestle with the fear that you have disappointed Him, or that His love has somehow lessened.

Jesus speaks directly into that struggle: Abide in My love.”

Not visit it. Not earn it. Not strive to maintain it.

ABIDE IN IT. REMAIN THERE. LIVE THERE.

“As The Father Loved Me” — The Measure of Christ’s Love For You

Before Jesus tells us to abide in His love, He defines it in a way that is almost overwhelming: As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you.”

This is not a casual comparison. Jesus is saying that the very love that exists between Him and the Father; the Perfect, Eternal, Unbroken Love within the Trinity is the same love He has for you.

That means:

  • His love for you is not shallow, it is PERFECT.

  • It is not temporary, it is ETERNAL.

  • It is not uncertain, it is SECURE.

This truth is difficult to fully grasp because we are so accustomed to human love, which is often inconsistent, conditional, or influenced by behavior. But Jesus is pointing to something entirely different.

Romans 5:8 reminds us: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

His love for you was not established when you were at your best, it was Proven when you were at your worst. This means His love is not sustained by your performance, it is sustained by His Nature.

Abiding In Love VS Earning Love

One of the greatest barriers to abiding in Christ’s love is the subtle belief that His love must be maintained or earned.

You may not say this out loud, but it can show up in how you live:

  • Feeling more accepted by God when you have had a “good” spiritual day.

  • Feeling distant or unworthy when you have failed.

  • Trying to “make up for” mistakes through effort or discipline.

  • Avoiding God when you feel ashamed.

This mindset turns Relationship into performance.

But Jesus does not say, “Earn My love.” He says, Abide in My love.”

To abide in His love means you are learning to Rest In What Is Already True, rather than striving to make it true. It means you stop measuring God’s love by your condition and start Trusting it based on Christ’s FINISHED WORK. This does not lead to complacency, it leads to Security. And from that security, REAL TRANSFORMATION begins.

The Stability Of His Love In Unstable Moments

Life is filled with moments that challenge your sense of stability; failure, disappointment, uncertainty, emotional struggle. In those moments, what you believe about God’s love becomes incredibly important. If you believe His love is conditional, you will withdraw. If you believe His love is steady, you will Remain.

Hebrews 13:5 says: I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Abiding in His love means choosing to believe that He has not stepped away from you, even when you feel distant. It means Trusting that His love has not weakened, even when your faith feels weak.

His love is not affected by your fluctuations. It remains constant, even when you do not.

Receiving Before Responding

Many believers try to love God without first learning how to Receive His Love. But love in the Christian life is always a RESPONSE, never the starting point.

1 John 4:19 says: We love Him because He first loved us.”

If you do not take time to receive His love, your attempts to love Him will eventually feel strained or empty. You will begin to rely on effort rather than RELATIONSHIP. Abiding in His love means slowing down enough to let it become REAL to you, not just intellectually, but PERSONALLY. It means allowing yourself to sit in His presence without trying to prove anything. It means letting HIS TRUTH SPEAK LOUDER than your self-criticism. It means accepting that you are fully known and still fully loved.

How His Love Transforms You

When you begin to abide in Christ’s love, something begins to change; not just in how you relate to God, but in how you Live.

His love:

  • Softens Your Heart where it has become hardened.

  • Brings Peace where there was anxiety.

  • Replaces fear with Trust.

  • Frees you from the need to prove yourself.

  • Deepens Your Capacity to love others.

You begin to live from a place of Acceptance, not for acceptance. This is where transformation becomes natural. You are no longer trying to change in order to be loved, you are being changed because you Are Loved.

Why We Drift From His Love

Even though His love is constant, our awareness of it is not. We can drift, not because He moves away, but because our attention shifts.

Common reasons we drift include:

  • Guilt and Shame that cause us to withdraw.

  • Distraction that pulls our focus elsewhere.

  • Performance-Based thinking that replaces Grace.

  • Lies we believe about ourselves or God.

When this happens, the answer is not to strive harder, but to RETURN. Abiding in His love is a Continual Returning to what is ALREADY TRUE.

Practicing Abiding in His Love

Learning to abide in His love is both simple and intentional.

It looks like:

  • Reminding yourself daily of what Scripture says about His love.

  • Speaking Truth over yourself when you feel unworthy.

  • Sitting Quietly with Him, not to perform, but to be with Him.

  • Rejecting thoughts that contradict His love.

  • Returning To Him quickly when you fail, instead of hiding.

Over time, this practice deepens your awareness of His love and anchors your identity in it.

Conclusion: Living From A Place Of Love

Week 7 brings us into a truth that is both simple and life-changing: You Are Already Loved; Deeply, Fully, And Securely In Christ.

Abiding in His love means choosing to live from that reality every day. It means refusing to let your failures redefine you, your emotions mislead you, or your performance control your sense of worth. You are not trying to reach His love. You are learning to REMAIN IN IT.

Sneak Preview: Week 8 — Obedience and Abiding

Next week, we will explore how obedience fits into abiding:If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love.” - John 15:10

Is obedience a condition for God’s love, or a response to it? How do we obey without falling into legalism? And what does true, love-driven obedience look like? You’ll begin to see that obedience is not about earning; it is about expressing a relationship that is already alive.
