Introduction: The Tension Many Feel

Jesus continues in John 15 with a statement that can easily be misunderstood if we are not careful:If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” - John 15:10

At first glance, this can sound like a condition; If I obey, then God will love me. For many believers, this is where tension begins. It can feel like everything we’ve just learned about grace and abiding is suddenly replaced with pressure and performance.

But Jesus is not contradicting Himself. He is not shifting from relationship to requirement. Instead, He is revealing something deeper: Obedience Is Not The Way You Earn His Love; It Is The Way You Live Within It.

Understanding this difference is ESSENTIAL. If you misunderstand obedience, you will either fall into legalism (trying to earn God’s favor) or drift into passivity (thinking obedience doesn’t matter). But when rightly understood, obedience becomes something entirely different; it becomes The Natural Expression Of A Heart That Is Abiding In Christ.

Obedience As Relationship, Not Requirement

Jesus gives us the perfect model: Just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” Notice the RELATIONSHIP here. Jesus is not obeying the Father to earn His love, He is obeying because He ALREADY LIVES IN that love. His obedience flows from Intimacy, not insecurity.

This is the same pattern for us.

Obedience is not about trying to prove something to God. It is about RESPONDING to Him. It is what happens when your Heart Is Aligned with His, when your Desires Are Shaped by His presence, and when your Love For Him becomes REAL and ACTIVE.

1 John 5:3 says: For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”

This verse reveals something important: When Obedience Is Rooted In Love, it is no longer a heavy burden, It Becomes A Willing Response.

The Difference Between Legalism And Love

Many believers have experienced obedience through the lens of legalism, even if unintentionally.

Legalism tells people:

  • I obey so God will accept me.

  • I obey to prove I am good enough.

  • I obey out of fear of failure or punishment.

This leads to pressure, guilt, and eventually exhaustion.

Obedience Rooted In Abiding says:

  • I obey because I AM ALREADY ACCEPTED IN CHRIST.

  • I obey because I LOVE HIM.

  • I obey because I TRUST HIS WAYS ARE BETTER.

This leads to Freedom, Joy, & Deeper Intimacy.

Ephesians 2:8–10 reminds us: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

Obedience is not the foundation of your relationship with God, GRACE is. But obedience is the Fruit That Grows From That Relationship.

Obedience Keeps You Close

Jesus says that keeping His commandments allows you to “Abide In His Love.” This does not mean His love changes, it means your Experience Of That Love Deepens.

When you walk in obedience:

  • Your Heart Stays Aligned With Him.

  • Your Conscience Remains Clear.

  • Your Sensitivity To His Voice Increases.

  • Your Awareness Of His Presence Deepens.

But when you consistently resist His leading, something shifts, not in His love, but in your experience of closeness. Your heart can become dull, distracted, or distant.

Obedience, then, is not about maintaining God’s love, it is about Remaining In The Enjoyment And Reality Of It.

Love That Leads To Action

Jesus makes this connection unmistakably clear: John 14:15 says: If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

Love that never moves into action is incomplete. In human relationships, we understand this naturally, love expresses itself. It shows up in choices, in priorities, in sacrifice. The same is true in our Relationship With Christ. When you begin to Abide In His Love, obedience becomes less about obligation and more about DESIRE. You begin to WANT WHAT HE WANTS. You begin to CARE ABOUT WHAT PLEASES HIM. Not perfectly, but Genuinely.

This is not forced, it is Formed Over Time as you REMAIN in Him.

What Does Obedience Look Like Practically?

Obedience is not only about large, life-altering decisions. Often, it is found in Small, Daily Moments where you choose to respond to God’s leading.

It may look like:

  • Choosing Honesty when it would be easier to hide.

  • Responding With Patience instead of frustration.

  • Forgiving Someone when your flesh resists.

  • Turning Away From Sin, even when it feels difficult.

  • Acting In Love Toward Someone who doesn’t deserve it.

These moments may seem small, but they are SIGNIFICANT. They are the places where Abiding Becomes Visible. Obedience is not about perfection, it is about Direction. It is a life INCREASINGLY ALIGNED WITH CHRIST.

When Obedience Feels Hard

There will be times when obedience does not feel easy. Your emotions may resist. Your desires may pull you in another direction. The Cost May Feel Real. In those moments, Obedience Becomes An Act Of Trust.

Proverbs 3:5–6 says: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Obedience is trusting that God’s way is better, even when you do not fully understand it. It is Choosing His Truth over your feelings, His Direction over your instincts. And in those moments, something deep happens, your FAITH GROWS, your DEPENDENCE INCREASES, and your Relationship With Him Strengthens.

Obedience & Grace Walk Together

It is important to remember that even in obedience, Grace is still at work. You will not obey perfectly. There will be moments of failure, hesitation, or struggle. But those moments do not remove you from God’s love, THEY INVITE YOU BACK INTO HIS LOVE.

1 John 1:9 reminds us: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Abiding Includes Returning. When you fail, you do not run from God, YOU RUN TO HIM. You Confess, Receive His Grace, and Continue Walking With Him. Obedience is not about never failing, it is about Continuing To Follow.

Conclusion: A Life That Responds To Love

Week 8 brings clarity to a vital truth: Obedience Is Not The Price Of God’s Love, It Is The Response To It. When you abide in Christ, obedience begins to flow naturally. Not perfectly, not instantly, but Genuinely. It becomes the outward expression of an INWARD CONNECTION. You are not trying to earn your place, You Are Living From It.

Father, we Thank You that Your love is not something we have to earn. Forgive us for the times we have approached obedience with pressure or fear. Teach us to obey from a place of love, not obligation. Shape our hears so that we desire what You desire. When obedience feels difficult, give us strength to trust You. When we fail, remind us of Your grace and draw each of us back to You. Let our lives reflect a genuine response to the love You have already given us in Christ.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Sneak Preview: Week 9 — Joy in Abiding

Next week, we will discover something often overlooked in the Christian life: That My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” - John 15:11

Is joy really meant to be a consistent part of your walk with Christ? Why do so many believers feel joyless or weary? And how does abiding produce a deep, lasting joy? You’ll begin to see that joy is not a distant ideal, it is a natural result of remaining in Him.
