Objective:
To examine how Christ can remain the central focus of church life in worship, teaching, and fellowship, and to provide practical steps for ensuring all church activities glorify Him.
Introduction: The Centrality of Christ
The Church was founded on Christ, and its vitality depends on Him remaining at the center of all activities. Colossians 1:18 declares: “He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” Christ-centered focus ensures that worship is authentic, teaching is biblically sound, and fellowship reflects His love.
When Christ is displaced by entertainment, human leadership, cultural trends, or traditions—the Church risks becoming a human-centered institution rather than a God-centered community. Matthew 15:8-9 warns: “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” True worship and teaching must align with Scripture, and fellowship must cultivate obedience, love, and unity in Christ.
Christ-Centered Worship
1. Exalting Christ: Worship is first and foremost about glorifying Jesus, not entertaining attendees or showcasing human talent.
John 4:23-24 says: “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” Worship must engage the heart, mind, and soul, focusing on Christ’s character, works, and redemptive mission rather than ritual or performance.
2. Scripture-Grounded Praise: Every element of worship—songs, prayers, sermons—should be rooted in God’s Word.
Psalm 96:1-3 calls believers to “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.” Christ-centered worship points directly to His glory and redemptive work.
3. Active Participation: True worship engages the congregation in prayer, singing, confession, and reflection. It is not passive entertainment but an expression of obedience and love toward Christ (Hebrews 13:15).
Hebrews 13:15, "Through Him then, let’s continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips praising His name."
Christ-Centered Teaching
1. Scripture as Authority: Teaching must be anchored in the Word of God.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Leaders must prioritize biblical truth over opinion, tradition, or cultural relevance.
2. Christ as the Lens: All teaching must point to Christ.
Luke 24:27 demonstrates this principle: “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” Every lesson, doctrine, or application should reveal Christ’s person, mission, and authority.
3. Application to Life: Teaching is not merely informational; it must transform hearts and behaviors.
James 1:22 emphasizes obedience: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Christ-centered teaching equips believers to live faithfully in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
Christ-Centered Fellowship
1. Unity in Christ: Fellowship should reflect the unity of the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:3-6 instructs: “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all.” Christ-centered fellowship fosters love, humility, and accountability among believers.
2. Mutual Edification: Fellowship should encourage spiritual growth, prayer, and service.
Hebrews 10:24-25 says: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, but encouraging one another.” The goal is building each other up in Christ rather than pursuing social comfort or convenience.
3. Service-Oriented Community: Fellowship is incomplete without outward action.
Acts 2:44-47 describes believers sharing resources, helping those in need, and spreading the gospel. Christ-centered fellowship is both relational and missional. "And all the believers were together and had all things in common; and they would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved."
Practical Steps to Keep Christ at the Center
• Evaluate Worship Practices: Ensure songs, prayers, and rituals glorify Christ and convey biblical truth.
• Examine Teaching: Align every lesson, sermon, or discussion with Scripture and Christ’s mission.
• Foster Christ-Centered Fellowship: Encourage small groups, accountability, prayer circles, and service opportunities focused on obedience and growth.
• Guard Against Distractions: Minimize cultural trends, entertainment-driven practices, or human-centered leadership that draw focus away from Christ.
• Personal Reflection: Regularly assess your own priorities in worship, learning, and community; are you focused on Christ?
Application and Reflection
This week, reflect on your personal and corporate practices.
Is Christ truly at the center of my worship, study, and relationships in the Church?
Are there traditions or practices that have shifted the focus from Christ to human preference?
How can I actively participate in keeping Christ central in my church community?
What one area of worship, teaching, or fellowship can I adjust to better honor Christ?
How can I encourage others in my church to keep Christ central?
What personal disciplines help me remain focused on Christ daily?
Discussion Questions
1. Why is it essential for Christ to remain the center of the Church?
2. How can worship be both heartfelt and Christ-focused?
3. In what ways can teaching stray from Christ, and how can it be corrected?
4. How does fellowship reflect Christ-centered priorities, and how can it be strengthened?
5. What practical steps can both leaders and members take to maintain Christ’s supremacy in all church activities?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the head of the Church and the focus of our lives. Help us to worship You in spirit and truth, to teach Your Word faithfully, and to fellowship in ways that build unity, love, and obedience. Guard our hearts against distractions that shift our focus from You, and empower us to keep You at the center in every aspect of church life. May all we do glorify Your name.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
