Introduction: The Incarnation: The Miracle That Towers Above All Others

There is no miracle in the Christian faith greater, deeper, or more staggering than this one: God became man.

Not Temporarily,

Not Symbolically,

Not Partially,

Not in Disguise,

The Eternal, Infinite, Uncreated Son of God took on real human nature, real human flesh, and real human limitations, but without ceasing to be God.

This is the Incarnation.

At Christmas, this is the moment the invisible becomes the visible, the infinite becomes an infant, the Creator becomes a creature, and the Word becomes flesh,

John 1:14, "And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."

The Child in the manager is:

  • Older than His Mother,

  • As old as His Father,

  • The God who created Mary,

  • The God who holds the universe together,

  • The God who knit Himself into a womb He spoke into existence,

Nothing in history can rival this magnificent mystery!

Christmas is not merely a sentimental time; but it is a celebration!

It is not merely emotional; but it is eternal!

It is not merely about a baby; it is about the God who came to save us!

Let us explore this week as we look into why He came - not from our perspective, but from His.

Why would the infinite God enter a world of dirt, hunger, tears, betrayal, temptation, suffering , and death? Why would He choose a manger instead of a throne, poverty instead of power, humility instead of glory? Why would the One who spoke galaxies into existence wrap Himself in frail humanity? There is truly only one answer: Love, a love so holy, self-giving, redeeming, and relentless that He would go to a wooden cross to become a curse for us.

So why did God become a man?

The Miracle Explained: What It Means That "God Became Flesh"

Before we understand why God became man, we must grasp first what happened. For 4,000 years, God had spoke through many avenues to His people.

Examples - Thunder, Fire, Angelic Visitations, Prophets, Judges, Kings, Visionaries, Scrolls, Sacrifices, Symbols, Shadow, Type, & Promise.

However, God was doing something new when it came to Bethlehem, God speaks in Bethlehem in a way that He had never done before, in Fleshly appearance.

We know the verse in John 1:14 which says, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us."

But have you ever shown reverent attention to how deep it truly is in meaning?

'The Word' - The Eternal Son

In Greek, the Word, Logos implies: wisdom, reason, speech, expression, revelation.

John is saying, 'the eternal expression of God, the eternal Son, the One who is God . . .'

'Became Flesh'

He did not 'appear' - He did not 'pretend' - He did not 'borrow a body' - He BECAME Flesh!

Not 50% God + 50% Man,

Not God inside a shell,

Not God occasionally using a body,

He became TRULY human without CEASING to be TRULY God!

This mysterying is beyond full comprehension, yet utterly foundation to the Christian faith.

'Dwelt Among Us' - God Built A Tent In Our Neighborhood

The word 'dwelt' means tabernacled - God pitched His tent among us.

Where else has this happened in the past?

When God dwelt among Israel in the tabernacle, when His Glory rested between the Cherubim, and when His Presence moved with His people wherever they traveled and dwelt. Now, God came in flesh to walk our roads, breathe our air, and live among us. The God who descended on Mount Sinai now lies in a manger in Bethlehem. This is the miracle that the angels sang of, the prophets longed to see, and the world had waited millennia to witness. And there were reasons why God did this.

Reason #1 - Jesus Came To Reveal The Father

John 14:9, "Jesus *said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?"

Humanity had read about a future Messiah, but because time had gone so long in awaiting a Messiah to come, many had doubted and even forgotten. Those who still believed misinterpreted the Scriptures as Him coming as a conquering King who would overthrow Rome, who would establish His Kingdom on the earth forever, and all of evil would be conquered.

Others viewed God as distant, angry, unpredictable, unreachable, and unknowable. So what does God do? He comes down Himself in the flesh.

Jesus Is The Perfect Revelation Of God

Hebrews 1:3 says, "And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high."

John 1:18 says, "No one has seen God at any time; God the only Son, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him."

Colossians 1:15 says, "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation."

Jesus did not merely teach about God - He REVEALED God!

His Compassion - God's Heart

His Authority - God's Power

His Forgiveness - God's Mercy

His Tears - His Empathy

His Anger At Sin - His Holiness

His Sacrifice - His Love

The Incarnation means God made Himself KNOWABLE!

People Asked: 'What Is God Like?'

Jesus came and said, "LOOK AT ME!"

When Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus' reply was, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father." - John 14:9

If you WANT to KNOW God, LOOK at Jesus!

His Words - God's Voice

His Actions - God's Heart

His Miracles - God's Hand

His Cross - God's Love

Christmas is God's way of saying out loud,

"If you WANT to KNOW who I AM, LOOK AT MY SON!"

Reason #2 - Jesus Came To Destroy The Works Of The Devil

1 John 3:8, "the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil."

Christmas is war! Not a war with weapons, but a war for souls! Christ's coming is a declaration of divine invasion from the supernatural into the natural realm we live in.

Why do you think in our world for centuries, countless churches are full to the brim at Christmas?

Satan's Works Are Many

Sin, Deception, Condemnation, Fear of Death, Bondage, Darkness, Accusation, Temptation, Lies, & Oppression - Jesus came to DESTROY EVERY ONE of them, NOT PARTIALLY, but ENTIRELY!

Christmas Is Satan's Defeat Announced

Genesis 3:15, "And I will make enemies Of you and the woman, And of your offspring and her Descendant; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise Him on the heel.

The bruising of the heel, the crushing of the head.

Christ's heel and Satan's head!

Christmas means:

The serpent's days are numbered.

His dominion is temporary.

His power is limited.

His defeated is certain.

The entrance of Jesus into the world is the beginning of the enemy's end!

In the very end of time, when Christ comes to reign at the Millennial,

He Returns as He did before to crush the enemy just as He did in Bethlehem!

Every Miracle Christ Performs Is A Blow Against The Gates Of Hell

When Christ casts out demons - The kingdom of darkness trembles!

When He heals - He reverses the curse!

When He forgives sins - He breaks chains!

When He dies - He crushes the serpent's skull!

When He rises - He removes the sting of death forever!

Christmas is D-Day!

Calvary is V-Day!

The Resurrection Seals Satan's Defeat Eternally!

Reason #3 - Jesus Came To Be Our Mediator

1 Timothy 2:5 says, "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus."

So why did God have to come as a man? It is because humanity needed a mediator, one who could represent both God and man.

A Mediator Must Truly Belong To Both Sides

A true mediator must understands both parties fully. To reconcile God and man, the mediator must be God to represent God perfectly and the mediator must be man in order to represent humanity fully.

No angel, prophet, or priest could do this. ONLY Jesus could!

He Is:

Fully God, Fully Man, Perfectly Sinless, & Eternally Alive

Jesus Bridges The Infinite Gap

Sin created a chasm no human could cross over.

Jesus, the God-man, stretches His arms wide - one hand holding God,

the other holding humanity - and brings us together through His Cross.

He is the ladder Jacob saw; the bridge Job longed for; the priest Melchizedek foreshadowed;

and the mercy seat the temple symbolized. Jesus didn't come to patch up the relationship, He came to RESTORE IT FOREVER!

Reason #4 - Jesus Became A Man To Sympathize With Our Weakness

Hebrews 4:15, "For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin."

Jesus Knows - He Understands - He Has Felt What You Feel

Jesus Understands Temptation

Jesus was tempted in ALL things we've gone through in this life, however, He was WITHOUT SIN.

  • He Understands Hunger

    - Matthew 4:2, "And after He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry."

  • He Understands Thirst

    - John 19:28, "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled, *said, “I am thirsty.”

  • He Understands Exhaustion

    - Mark 4:38, "And yet Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

  • He Understands Sorrow

    - Isaiah 53:3, "He was despised and abandoned by men, A man of great pain and familiar with sickness; And like one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we had no regard for Him."

  • He Understands Rejection

    - John 1:11, "He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him."

  • He Understands Betrayal

    - "Luke 22:48, "But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

  • He Understands Grief

    - John 11:35, "Jesus wept."

  • He Understands Anger At Evil

    - Mark 3:5, "After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He *said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored."

  • He Understands Loneliness

    - "Matthew 26:56, "But all this has taken place so that the Scriptures of the prophets will be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled."

Jesus did not save you from a DISTANCE, He ENTERED your world to FEEL your WOUNDS!

No Suffering You Face Is Foreign To Him

Whatever you bring to Him, He has walked it, He has felt it,

He has overcome it, & this makes Him your perfect Savior!

Reason #5 - Jesus Came To Be The Perfect Sacrifice

Hebrews 10:5-7, "Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, “You have not desired sacrifice and offering, But You have prepared a body for M e; You have not taken pleasure in whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin. “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come (It is written of Me in the scroll of the book ) To do Your will , O God.’ ”

This is the heart of Christmas. Jesus was BORN so He would DIE.

Jesus did not come mainly to teach or heal or to serve,

He came to give His life as a ransom for many.

Yet, oh how we have rejected this costly sacrifice for our own vain wants, desires, & fame.

Mark 10:45, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

A Body Prepared For Him

Hebrews 10:5, "Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, “You have not desired sacrifice and offering , But You have prepared a body for Me."

Why does the text say a body prepared?

Why prepared?

It was because Jesus needed:

  • A Body To Be Pierced

  • A Body To Bleed

  • Hands To Be Nailed

  • A Back To Be Scourged

  • A Brow To Wear Thorns

  • Feet To Walk The Road To Calvary

  • A Side To Be Pierced

  • A Heart To Stop Beating

Jesus was BORN to DIE so that YOU could LIVE!

Only A Sinless Man Could Bear Sin

Only an infinite God could bear infinite wrath. Jesus is BOTH!

This is why the incarnation is so essential to understand:

If Jesus were not God, His death would not save.

If Jesus were not man, his death would not substitute.

A merely human Jesus could not redeem.

A merely divine Jesus could not represent.

But the God-man can do BOTH!

Reason #6 - Jesus Came To Fulfill Every Prophecy Of The Messiah

There were over 300 prophecies that pointed to His coming!

Jesus FULFILLED them all!

What does His birth fulfill?

  • Isaiah's Virgin Prophecy

  • Micah's Bethlehem Prophecy

  • Hosea's Egypt Prophecy

  • Jeremiah's Mourning Prophecy

  • Daniel's Timeframe Prophecy

  • Genesis' Promise Of The Seed

  • David's Covenant Of A Forever King

Christmas PROVES that God KEEPS EVERY WORD HE SPEAKS!

Reason #7 - Jesus Came To Bring Light, Life, Peace, & Salvation

John 1:4-5, "In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it."

These verses above summarize Christmas!

Jesus came to bring:

  • Life To The Spiritually Dead

  • Light To A Dark World

  • Peace To Those Far From God

  • Joy To The Brokenhearted

  • Hope To The Hopeless

  • Salvation To The Lost

  • Truth To A World Of Lies

  • Grace To The Guilty

  • Adoption To The Orphaned

  • Freedom To The Enslaved

Everything humanity longed for and still longs for today, it is FOUND in Him, Jesus.

Application

Think of this for Christmas:

The One who breathed out the stars chose to breathe human air.

The One whom angels worshiped was wrapped in swaddling clothes.

The One who owns all things was laid in a borrowed feeding trough.

The One who upholds the universe by His very Word was held by a teenage girl.

Jesus came:

Not because He needed us, but because we needed Him.

Not because we were worthy, but because He is merciful.

Not because we sought God, but because God sought us.

The Incarnation is the ultimate declaration:

God Refuses To Let Sin, Satan, & Death Have The Last Word!

Reflection & Discussion

  1. How does Jesus reveal God's heart more clearly than anything else?

  2. Which aspect of Jesus' humanity comforts you the most?

  3. How does understanding the Incarnation deepen your worship?

  4. Why couldn't anyone but Jesus be our Mediator?

  5. Which "work of the devil" in your life do you want Jesus to destroy?

  6. What does it mean to you personally that Jesus understands your weaknesses?

Prayer For This Week

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the wonder of the Incarnation that You did not remain distant, but stepped into our world, clothed in flesh, to dwell among us. We stand in awe that the eternal Word became man, full of grace and truth. Thank You, Jesus, for humbling Yourself, for entering our brokeness, and for revealing the heart of the Father to us.

As we close this time of study, seal these truths in our hearts. Let the mystery of the Incarnation deepen our worship, strengthen our faith, and shape the way we live. Teach us to walk in humility, obedience, and love, just as Christ did. May we never grow casual with the miracle that God became man so that we might be redeemed.

Prepare our hearts now for what lies ahead in these coming weeks and stir within us a hunger to understand not only what Christ came to do, but why He came. We surrender our lives anew to You, Lord, trusting that the same God who entered history is still at work in us today. May Christ be formed in us for Your glory and for the hope of the world.

In Your Heavenly Name We Pray, Amen.

Sneak Preview - Week 3

In Week 3, we are going to go from the miracle of the Incarnation to the mission. The question is no longer only "How could God become man?" but "Why did He?" Scripture makes it clear that the Incarnation was not symbolic, accidental, or merely inspirational - it was intentional, necessary, and divinely planned from eternity. We will uncover the multiple purposes for which Christ came in the flesh, revealing that Bethlehem was the doorway to Calvary, the empty tomb, and the coming Kingdom.
