John 1:14, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us . . . full of grace and truth."
Introduction: Christmas Is The First Chapter Of An Endless Story
This is our final week on our study on Why Jesus Came. During the last three weeks we have studied on the miracle of the incarnation; the mission of Christ's redemptive work; and the purpose behind God becoming man in flesh. This week, we step into something breathtaking:
Christmas Is Not A Seasonal Celebration: It Is An Eternal Event With Everlasting Consequences!
Christmas DOES NOT END at the Manger!
Christmas DOES NOT END at the Cross!
Christmas DOES NOT END at the Resurrection!
Christmas DOES NOT END at the Return of Christ!
Christmas ECHOES INTO ETERNITY!
In fact, when we examine Scripture, we discover this truth: the incarnation is the most important event in the history of the universe and it is also the most important event in YOUR eternal future!
Why? Well, this week we are going to explore seven massive & eternal implications of the incarnation - truths so deep, so exhilarating, so cosmic, that they form the foundation of Christian hope forever.
The Incarnation Guarantees Eternal Salvation
Jesus Became Man Forever - Not Just For Thirty-Three Years
Many Christians mistankenly believe that Jesus stopped being human after the resurrection. Scripture is emphatic why this is not true.
He Rose Bodily
Luke 24:39, "See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you plainly see that I have.”
He Ascended Bodily
Acts 1:9-11, "And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, then behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them, and they said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
He Is Returning Bodily
Revelation 1:7, "Behold , He is coming with the clouds , and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen."
He Reigns As The "Man Christ Jesus"
1 Timothy 2:5, "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus,"
He Is The "Firstborn Among Many Brethren"
Romans 8:29, "For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters;"
What this means is that Jesus is STILL HUMAN right now and ALWAYS will be!
Jesus did not take on humanity temporarily; He united with humanity permanently. Our Savior is a REAL, GLORIFIED human being, SEATED on the THRONE of the universe! Why is this important?
Because if Jesus stopped being human, He could not represent you. If He stopped representing you, you could not be saved. If He crossed being the God-Man, mediation would end. If mediation ended, salvation would collapse instantly. But because Jesus if forever the God-Man: your Salvation is Secure, your Justification is Unshakeable, your Adoption is Permanent, your Access to God will never be Revoked, and your Eternal Life cannot be Lost!
Hebrews 7:25 says, "Therefore He is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them."
Eternal Salvation Requires An Eternal Savior! That Is Exactly What Christmas Gave Us!
The Incarnation Opens Eternal Access To God
The Veil Is Gone
Matthew 10:19-22, "But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who are speaking, but it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking in you. “Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved."
What is this verse saying? This verse shows us that the tearing was permanent; that God Himself ripped it in half; and that seperation from us to Him directly can never allow us to be seperated again. Why? It is because Christ became the final and eternal access point to God!
Hebrews 10:19-22 tells us, "Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, through His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let’s approach God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water."
What does this mean? It means that we have boldness to enter His Presence; we have access to Him directly in His Holy Courts; by Christ's covering we can enter in; through Jesus teaching us a new way and living way in Him we can live by Him and Him alone; and by believing what He did for us as fully God and fully Man, it has created an eternal and permanent pathway into God's presence.
Access Is Not Seasonal - It Is Eternal
What Was Within The Old Covenant?
Access was Limited
Access was Restricted
Access was Temporary
Acess was Mediated by Flawed Priests
What Was Given For Us In The New Covenant?
Access is Open
Access is Constant
Access is not based on your Performance
Access is based on Christ's Finished Work
Acess is Eternal because Jesus is Eternal
Christmas means: you and I will never again stand out side the presence of God; we will never against be separated; and we will have eternal access from now on, through death, and in eternity!
The Incarantion Guarantees The Resurrection Of Your Body
Jesus Is The 'First-fruits' of Resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:20 says, "But the fact is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep."
If Jesus remained God-only, resurrection would be impossible. God cannot rise from the dead - because God cannot die. However, Jesus took on flesh so He could die in your place, rise in your nature, gurantee your resurrection. Why? Because of His resurrection physically, believers after death will rise physically also.
Christ's Resurrection Body Is:
Physical - Luke 24:39, "See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you plainly see that I have.”
Glorified - Philippians 3:21, "who will transform the body of our lowly condition into conformity with His glorious body, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself."
Indestructible - Romans 6:9, "knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him."
Immortal - 1 Corinthians 15:53-54, "For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written: “D eath has been swallowed up in victory."
Christmas Makes Resurrection Possible
If Jesus had never been born in a body there would be no cross, no resurrection, no empty tomb, no victory over death, no hope for your body, and no eternal life.
Christmas doesn't just give you forgivenes, it gives you a future, physical, glorified, resurrected body like His. (John 3:2)
John 3:2, "this man came to Jesus at night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
A body with no sickness, no aging, no weakness, no decay, no death, no pain, no temptation, and no sin. The incarnation is the foundation of the resurrection.
The Incarnation Secures The New Heavens And The New Earth
Creation Itself Was Waiting For Christmas
Romans 8:19-23, "For the eagerly awaiting creation waits for the revealing of the sons and daughters of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only that, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons and daughters, the redemption of our body."
This verse is teaching us that creation is groaning and it is waiting for redemption from Christ.
Now why would creation be graoning? It is because creation fell with Adam, but Creation rises with Christ for when we are baptized with Christ in baptism, we become a new creation.
Jesus Will Reign On A Real Earth In A Real Body
Revelation Chapters 21 & 22 describes an eternal state on earth that is:
Physical
Tangible
New
Renewed
Glorious
Beautiful
Filled With The Presence Of God
But why must the eternal Kingdom be physical?
The King is Physical
The Redeemed are Physical
The Resurrection is Physical
The Incarnation is Permanent
Heaven is NOT ETERNAL of disembodied individuals floating around. Heaven is the God of Heaven dwelling with His People on a renewed earth!
Revelation 21:3, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,"
Christmas makes this future possible.
The Incarnation Makes Jesus The Eternal King Of The Universe
Isaiah 9:6-7 says, "For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this."
This verse above is NOT poetry, but LITERAL PROPHECY!
Jesus Will Rule Bodily, Physically, & Forever
Because Jesus Became Human:
Jesus Sits On David's Throne
Luke 1:32-33, "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
He Fulfills The Davidic Covenant
2 Samuel Chapter 7
He Reigns With The Authority Of Both God & Man
Ephesians 1:20-23, "which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and made Him head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all."
His Rule Is Eternal, Universal, Righteous, & Unstoppable
Daniel 7:14, "And to Him was given dominion, Honor, and a kingdom, So that all the peoples, nations, and populations of all languages Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed."
Christmas Enthroned A King
Jesus Is The One:
Who Knows Our Pain
Who Knows Our Sorrow
Who Knows Our Temptation
Who Knows Our Weakness
Who Knows Our Grief
Who Knows Humanity
Christ rules not as a distant deity, but as a sympathetic sovereign King who understands His people intimately because He lived among them.
Hebrews 4:15, "For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin."
His incarnation makes Him the Perfect Eternal King with being compassionate, righteous, and infinitely wise!
The Incarnation Creates An Eternal Family
Adoption Was Always The Goal
Galatians 4:4-7, "But when the fullness of the time came, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons and daughters. Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba! Father!”
Ephesians 1:5, "He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,"
Christmas is the doorway into adoption.
Adoption Lasts Forever
You are not a Temporary Child of God.
You are not a Seasonal Child of God.
You are not a Child until you Mess Up.
You are His Child Forever!
Why? Because Christ's work is Eternal; His Priesthood is Eternal; His Intercession is Eternal; His Spirit is Eternal; His Covenant is Eternal; and His Love is Eternal! Jesus did not come to make servants, He came to make siblings!
Hebrews 2:11 says, "For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for this reason He is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers , In the midst of the assembly I will sing Your praise.”
Christmas makes you part of God's Eternal Household.
The Incarnation Makes Eternal Worship Possible
Revelation Chapter 5 gives us a glimpse into the Eternal Worship of Christ.
"Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!" and again, "Worthy are You . . . for You were slain, and by Your blood You ransomed people for God . . . and they shall reign on the earth."
The Lamb Is The Centerpiece Of Eternal Worship
In Eternity:
We won't worship Angels.
We won't worship Prophets.
We won't worship Saints.
We won't worship Ourselves.
We won't worship Abstract Concepts.
We will worship THE LAMB OF GOD, the God-Man, the One who Died & Rose from the Grave!
The incarnation makes eternal worship possible because the incarnation makes redemption possible!
The Humanity Of Christ Will Be Praised Forever
We will not only praise His Deity, but we will praise His Humanity. Why? It is because His Humanity is the vehicle of our Salvation! His scars will shine forever (John 20:27), His resurrected body will be admired forever (2 Thessalonians 1:10), and His Sacrificial Love will be adorned forever!
Christmas gave the universe its eternal song.
Conclusion: The Incarnation Is The Foundation Of Everything
We now come to our end of our four week study about Why Jesus Came.
Consider what Christmas truly means:
Without the incarnation, there is NO CROSS.
Without the incarnation, there is NO RESURRECTION.
Without the incarnation, there is NO HOPE.
Without the incarnation, there is NO SALVATION.
Without the incarnation, eternity COLLAPSES.
Everything God has done, is doing, and will do for His people flows from the decision that the Son of God took to take on human flesh. Christmas is the even that changed the universe and will shape eternity forever. The big question now is, has the incarnation changed your eternity?
Prayer For This Week
Eternal Father,
We thank You for the wonder of the Incarnation that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. In Christ, You stepped into time to change eternity. What began in a manger now reigns on the throne forever.
Lord Jesus, because You came, sin was defeated, death was conquered, and redemption was secured for all who believe. Your coming did not merely affect one moment in history, it altered the destiny of the world. You are the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End.
Holy Spirit, seal these truths in our hearts. Let us live with eternity in view, walking in holiness, hope, and humble obedience. May our lives proclaim that Christ has come, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again.
Until that glorious day, strengthen us to stand firm, love boldy, and shine as witnesses of Your eternal kingdom.
We give You all the glory, honor, and praise, now and forever.
In the mighty name of Jesus we pray,
Amen.
