Introduction: A Question Of Hope & Timing
Few topics in Bible Prophecy stir as much debate among believers as the timing of the Rapture. While most Christians agree that Christ will return for His people, the question is: when will this happen in relation to the Tribulation Period on Earth?
The Tribulation is described in Scripture as a seven-year period of intense judgment and global distress among the nations (Daniel 9:27; Matthew 24:21; Revelation Chapters 6-18) The Rapture, (the catching away of believers) must occur either before, in the middle of, or after this period.
"And he will confirm a covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come the one who makes desolate, until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, gushes forth on the one who makes desolate.” - Daniel 9:27
"For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will again." - Matthew 24:21
In this week's study, we are going to examine the three main views.
Pre-Tribulation: Christ gathers His Church before the Tribulation.
Mid-Tribulation: The Church endures the first half, but is Raptured before the Great Tribulation (the last 3 1/2 years).
Post-Tribulation: The Church is caught up at the end of the Tribulation, just before the Second Coming of Christ.
Scriptural Foundation
"For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him."
- 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10
"Because you have kept My word of perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of the testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who live on the earth."
- Revelation 3:10
"But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet blast, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other." - Matthew 24:29-31
The Three Main Views Of The Rapture's Timing
Pre-Tribulation
Believers are taken before the Seven-Year Tribulation.
Supported Verse #1: 1 Thessalonians 5:9 (not appointed to wrath)
"For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,"
Supported Verse #2: Revelation 3:10 (kept from the hour of trial)
"Because you have kept My word of perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of the testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who live on the earth."
- The Church is the Bride of Christ: Christ calls the Bride home by removing her before God pours out His righteous wrath on the earth.
- Emphasizes Imminency: the Rapture could happen at any moment.
Strength - encourages Hope and Expectancy.
Challenge - critics argue it relies on inference, not a direct statement scripturally.
Mid-Tribulation
The Rapture occurs at the midpoint of the Tribulation (after 3 1/2 years).
Supported Verse: Revelation 5:11 (tied to the seventh trumpet)
"Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands,"
- The Church/Bride of Christ: endures the early trials of the Tribulation, but are spared the worst judgments in the later half 3 1/2 years (the 'Great Tribulation')
Strength: connects the Rapture with Revelation's Trumpet Judgments.
Challenge: timing depends on interpreting symbolic passages literally.
Post-Tribulation
The Rapture happens after the Tribulation before Christ's Visible Second Coming.
Supported Verse: Matthew 24:29-31, (the elect are gathered 'immediately after the distress').
“But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet blast, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other."
- Believers are preserved through the Tribulation: believers are then Raptured before Christ's descent to the Earth in the Second Coming.(False - Believers Are Not Preserved, Only The 144,000 Pure Jewish Men of Israel That God Will Separate By The Two Witnesses In Revelation 7:4-8).
"And I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: from the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, and from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed."
Strength: sees Rapture and Second Coming as One climactic event together.
Challenge: raises the questions about who populates the Millennium if all believers are glorified at once.
Timeline Comparison
Pre-Tribulation View
Church Age - Rapture - Tribulation - Second Coming - Millennium
Mid-Tribulation View
Church Age - First 3 1/2 Years Of Tribulation - Rapture
- The Great Tribulation - Second Coming - Millennium
Post-Tribulation View
Church Age - Tribulation - Rapture & Second Coming (Same Event) - Millennium
Why The Timing Matters For Believers
Though the exact timing of the Rapture has been debated for centuries, the central truth remains: Christ is coming for His Church. The hope of the Rapture should not lead to division, but to holiness, urgency, and perseverance.
Paul tells us in Titus 2:11-15, "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, eager for good deeds. These things speak and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. No one is to disregard you."
Regardless of the timing, we are called to be READY at ALL TIMES & SEASONS.
Summary
The Rapture's Timing Is Debated - Pre, Mid, or Post Tribulation.
Pre-Trib emphasizes deliverance from wrath.
Mid-Trib emphasizes delieverance before the worst.
Post-Trib emphasizes endurance through the Tribulation.
All agree that Christ will return for His people.
The most important application we can obtain: live ready and faithful.
